As a result, Legendia is really three separate stories strung together, separated by brief periods of calm in which several weeks pass uneventfully. The first part deals with Shirley's kidnapping, while the second part focuses on Shirley's role as the Merines. The final part, the character quests, focuses on a mysterious black mist that starts appearing on the Legacy. Each part is mostly self-contained, though characters and subplots carry over and resolve themselves over the course of all three. Overall, the story is structured very well, and ends up being the primary focus and driving force of the game. Of particular note is the fact that each character is thoroughly explored, particularly during the character quests. Each one has a detailed history and strong motivation to be on board the Legacy, and the character quests really help to flesh them out, leading to some of the best moments in the entire series. At the same time, the game has no problem is being overly cheesy or silly, but luckily it does a good job of keeping it separate. |
Though many have blasted the Tales games for their allegedly-lackluster storylines, I actually found Legendia's story to perhaps be one of the best of the series. Character development, for one, is perhaps the strongest of the franchise, helped especially by the lengthy post-game Character Quests, with the supporting characters being memorable, as well. The Legacy itself gains reasonable backstory during the game, too. Granted, the villains seem a bit neglected, and it's a bit disappointing that the characters don't explore the world's mainland at all during the game. Still, Legendia's story offering is among the strongest of the Tales series. |
A few of Legendia's major plot devices are similar to ones used in previous Tales games. The ones that feel fresher aren't really that unique either as far as Japanese RPGs are concerned. But that said, Legendia's best qualities are its story and its great characters. It wouldn't win the Pulitzer Prize for writing in video games, if there was such a thing, but it will likely make some players want to keep playing to see what happens next in the story, or to see the next hilarious, light-hearted discussion. But unfortunately, players will have to go through heaps of uninspiring gameplay to get to these things. |
The Joys Of Life Are Here In These Moments! |
