In a nutshell, you need 50 genetically different people capable of breeding with one another to combat inbreeding; and a population of about 500 healthy individuals to combat genetic drift.
It is incredibly unlikely a single couple could save humanity. You could try, by having lots of kids; mating the healthiest offspring with the healthiest; again, mating their healthiest offspring, factoring in genetic distance; and continuing the process indefinitely. You’d need about 6–7 generations of as many offspring as possible to have a shot at the magical 50, and you’d need to keep matching mates for much longer to keep increasing genetic diversity. Odds are overwhelming that this would fail and within 3–4 generations, you’d have a population of unhealthy people, many of whom would be infertile in any case.
You can never say never, but you’d need incredible luck for basically every generation to randomly pass genes in a rather precise way from among millions of possible combinations to give you a chance; and to randomly mutate in a rather precise and benign way, too. |
Consanguinity and pre-reproductive mortality The greater homozygozity of inbred individuals can lead to the expression of rare, recessive genes inherited from a common ancestor, with increased levels of morbidity and mortality in their progeny. In the Pakistan study discussed above (Bittles, Grant, and Shami, 1993), total pre- and postnatal mortality to a maximum age of 10 years increased from 16.4 per cent in non-consanguineous progeny, to 20.1 per cent in second cousins, 22.9 per cent in first cousins once removed/double second cousins, 22.1 per cent in first cousins and 39.0 per cent in double first cousins. |
However, without stringent socioeconomic control, there can be no guarantee that a significant proportion of reported deaths was not primarily 'environmental' in origin, for example, resulting from infectious disease, nutritional disorders or even gynaecological immaturity in the case of first pregnancies delivered by very young mothers. |
